Inspired by Dr. Seuss’s lifelong goal to make learning to read fun, the Word Challenge is about having zany good fun while reading as many words as you can this summer! It’s AMAZING – in the first week, challenge participants read over 20 million words. Now we are challenging you to help us reach a NEW goal of 100 million words by July 31. Sign up and start logging words from any Dr. Seuss book.

Oh, What a Yuzz-a-ma-Tuzz!

Not sure how to count some of Dr. Seuss’s ingenious word creations? Never fear—use the handy-dandy Word Counter-Upper to discover exactly how many words are in each of Dr. Seuss’s books. Once you’ve read a book, simply add it to your log and watch your word total rise.

For the ever-so-curious, read on. These rules explain how we determined the total word count for every title that is on our Word Challenge book list.

Even MORE ways to join the fun!

The nationwide contest offers readers, families, and communities a unique opportunity to work together towards a shared reading goal of one hundred million Dr. Seuss words, all while helping to prevent the summer reading slide.  Carnival Cruise Lines and Scripps National Spelling Bee are partnering with Random House Children’s Books and Dr. Seuss Enterprises to support the challenge.

Carnival Cruise Lines will be challenging consumers to read the most Dr. Seuss words at sea. Beginning in early June, the line’s seagoing vacationers will be encouraged to participate. In support of the Word Challenge, Carnival will track the words read on board by guests each cruise and add them to the Word-a-ma-rometer on Seussville.com.

The Scripps National Spelling Bee will have promotions for the Word Challenge at the annual national competition held outside Washington D.C., happening this year May 27 – June 1. Events will include a Word-A-Thon on site for Bee participants as well as spectators to participate in to add to the word total, a Dr. Seuss-themed spelling bee to be streamed live on the Bee’s Facebook page, as well as fun activities and special appearances by The Cat in the Hat at the Dr. Seuss Bus that will be on site.
